Hainault Vineyard

Michael and Lyn Sykes purchased the vineyard in March 2002. Both continue to work in their usual employment while working on the vineyard every spare moment they have. They rely heavily on voluntary labour - family members and friends frequently come to the vineyard to work for lunch or a cuppa

The objective of Lyn and Michael is to continue to produce premium quality varietal wines while further developing a style synonymous with Perth Hills wines. A major goal is to reduce their reliance on chemicals and increase the use of organic solutions for the management of pests, weeds and diseases.

The 5 ha vineyard, located 25 km east of Perth at 400 m elevation is the highest vineyard in the State and nestles in forest in one of the coldest parts of the State, atop the darling scarp. It was originally selected as Gungin orchard early last century and was replanted as a vineyard in 1978 by Peter Fimmel, one of the pioneers of the infant Perth Hills Wine Region.

Vine rows run east-west beside an underground stream, which bisects the vineyard and has both gravel and loam soils over white clay. Vineyard management focuses on natural solutions and careful vine and fruit management to present the best possible fruit for handpicking.

Hainault vineyard is a family owned and operated boutique vineyard that is nestled in jarrah forest high in the Perth Hills region of Western Australia. The cool climate, high rainfall and rich loam soils found in the Bickley Valley create an ideal environment for the production of premium quality wine grapes. The Boobook owl, whose distinctive call is heard regularly, signifies the connection of Hainault with this unique environment.

2005 Sparkling Pinot Noir

Made in the traditional French method and bottle fermented with 18 months lees maturation. A delicate and dry sparkling wine with an intense fruit bouquet and distinct Pinot Noir characteristics. Creamy bubbles enhance the sustained power of the rich flavours on the palate. Made from estate grown fruit from 25 year old hand pruned and hand harvested vines. (Winemaker Julie White)

2005 Classic White

This lively young wine is a blend of 55% Semillon and 45% Chardonnay. It is a dry wine showing fresh, vibrant citrus and stonefruit aromas. The palate displays lime, apricot, melon and honey flavours and it has a crisp, lingering finish. A lightly oaked style using new French oak and premium quality estate-grown, hand-picked fruit from 25 year old vines. A good accompaniment to many foods including sea-food, chicken, anti-pasto and rich creamy sauces.

2006 Forest Fruits – Gewurztraminer

This is a wonderful early drinking semi-sweet white wine made from 100% Gewurztraminer grown in the cooler climate of the Bickley Valley. The aroma shows floral, rose petal and lychee characters while on the palate floral, passionfruit and lychee flavours dominate. Perfect to enjoy with spicy dishes, strong cheeses or as an aperitif.

Awarded Bronze medal at 2006 Perth Hills Wine Show

2006 Semillon (new release)

This single vineyard wine was fermented in both stainless steel and new French oak to produce a wine of both freshness and complexity. Lifted citrus aromatics dominate the palate which is complemented by careful use of oak. This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for up to 3 years.

Awarded Bronze medal at 2006 Perth Hills Wine Show

2004 Cabernet Sauvignon

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grown at Hainault vineyard in the Bickley Valley. This rich, deep red wine shows blackcurrant, violet and eucalyptus characters integrated with fine tannins and a rich coffee finish. Given 20 months in American Oak including some new oak. A well balanced, full bodied wine with great length. Bottled in December 2005 and released in April 2006. Great drinking now but will benefit from mid to long term cellaring.
