Castle Rock
Estate
Castle
Rock Estate is nestled on the eastern
slopes of the Porongurup mountain range
and is named after a prominent nearby
landmark. The vineyard has a cool and
elevated northerly aspect, resulting in
intensely flavoured wines.
Angelo and
Wendy Diletti first started plantings in
1983, releasing the first vintage Riesling
in 1986. This Riesling won an 18 point
silver award at the Mount Barker Wine Show
that year. Since then the Rieslings have
consistently won silver awards or better
in regional or capital city shows. Robin
Bradley in his "Little Gold Book",
Australian and New Zealand Vintages,
awards Castle Rock Rieslings five
stars.
The 2000
vintage was Castle Rocks' 15th year of
wine production. Previously the wines were
made by Winemaker Michael Staniford at
Alkoomi Wines, Frankland. Now Angelos'
son, Robert Diletti, has taken on the task
of making Castle Rock Wines after spending
two years as the Winemakers Assistant at
Alkoomi.
Furthermore
the construction of a winery at Castle
Rock Estate run by Rob and Angelo Diletti
means that personalised attention to wine
production which commenced with the 2001
vintage. Since first planting the
Rieslings in 1983, the Diletti family has
expanded the varieties grown at Castle
Rock.
These now
include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
Additionally a Liqueur Muscat and a
Sparkling White are available. There is
also a Late Harvest Riesling. Pinot Noir
is the most popular of the reds, usually
selling out within 3 or 4 months of their
release.
The wines
from Castle Rock Estate were made under
contract at Alkoomi winery from 1986 to
2000. The next phase of growth was to make
our wines on site at Castle Rock Estate.
After the 2000 vintage we decided to bite
the bullet and proceed with plans to build
a 200 tonne winery on the estate. Despite
having nearly twelve months, it was only
just completed on time, the first tanks
arriving only four days before the first
grapes arrived
The wine
is bottled on site by a portable bottling
line which is set up on the back of a
semi-trailer. This is an ideal arrangement
as we aren't sending the wine away in a
bulk tanker and we don't need to outlay
huge capital for a bottling line. Bottling
on site means we can be sure that the
quality and freshness of the wine is
maintained.
Castle
Rock Estate is located on the northeast
face of the Porongurup mountain range 40
km north east of Albany and 30 km
southeast of Mt. Barker. Along with its
unique culture of wineries, crafts and
accommodation, the Porongurups National
Park provides a natural scenic beauty. To
allow appreciation of this beauty, many
bushwalks have been created throughout the
park with varying degrees of difficulty.
